During the fourth day of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal trial in New York City, a hot mic moment caught the music mogul whispering a word of praise to his lawyer, apparently unaware that the microphone was still live.
His attorney, Anna Estevao, was in the middle of cross-examining Diddy’s ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, who had previously testified about the disturbing details of their past relationship, including claims about “freak off” parties.
Estevao sought to present a more nuanced portrayal of the relationship, referencing a 2017 message from Cassie to Diddy that read: “Please don’t play victim. That’s all you wanted, and that’s why I was upset. I love our FOs [Freak Offs] when we both want it.”
The defense also had Cassie confirm that the two had been in love during their 11-year relationship.
Following this exchange, Diddy reportedly whispered that he was “proud” of Estevao’s handling of the cross-examination. CNN noted that he seemed particularly focused on his lawyer throughout the session, passing frequent notes and watching her intently.
According to CNN’s Elizabeth Wagmeister, Cassie appeared more composed on the stand than earlier in the trial, even laughing a few times. The judge, mindful of Cassie’s late-stage pregnancy, ordered that the defense complete her cross-examination before the lunch break on Friday, May 16, though he remained open to granting extra time if necessary.
Diddy has denied all allegations. The trial remains ongoing, and if convicted, the hip-hop mogul could face a life sentence.
