New Jersey health officials are warning the public about a potential measles exposure during Shakira’s concert at MetLife Stadium on May 15. According to the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), a non-resident who attended the show was later confirmed to be infected with the highly contagious virus.
The Department emphasized that anyone who was at the concert and begins experiencing symptoms—such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, or rash—should call a healthcare provider before visiting any medical facility. Individuals are urged not to walk into clinics or emergency departments without calling ahead, to prevent further spread of the virus.
Symptoms of measles can appear up to 21 days after exposure, meaning attendees could develop signs of the illness as late as June 6. Those most at risk include individuals who have not received the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine or who have never had the disease.
Health authorities continue to recommend staying up to date with routine vaccinations, especially before international travel. Babies between 6 and 11 months old should receive one dose of the MMR vaccine before traveling and complete the two-dose series after their first birthday.
Measles is an airborne virus that spreads through coughing and sneezing. It can linger in the air for up to two hours and can also be transmitted by contact with saliva or mucus. Beyond the rash and flu-like symptoms, measles can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and in pregnant individuals, miscarriage or premature birth.
Officials are advising anyone who believes they were exposed at the concert to stay alert and follow public health guidance.
