Selena Gomez has found herself at the centre of public attention after posting—and later deleted—an emotional video addressing the recent immigration crackdown under the Trump administration. In the now-removed video, the Only Murders in the Building star, visibly tearful, expressed anguish over the treatment of immigrants, particularly children, in her community.
"All my people are getting attacked," she said, breaking down as the Mexican flag appeared on the screen. “I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
The video, initially shared with her 420 million Instagram followers, coincided with heightened immigration enforcement measures, including daily arrest quotas for immigration officers and the deployment of active-duty troops at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Gomez has long been vocal about her connection to immigrant communities. In a 2019 Time op-ed, she detailed her family’s immigration story, noting how her relatives immigrated to the United States from Mexico in the 1970s. For her, immigration "goes beyond politics" and is fundamentally a "human issue."
After deleting the post, Gomez reportedly commented, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”
The moment has sparked a larger conversation on social media about the emotional toll of these policies on public figures and their communities.
