Cynthia Erivo spent the last two years as the most famous green witch on the planet. So when she hosted Saturday Night Live UK last weekend, the obvious move would have been to put the green paint back on. She did the opposite.

In “Nigerian Wicked”, one of the standout sketches from Saturday’s episode on Sky and NOW, Erivo plays Glinda, all pink tracksuit, blonde wig and attitude. The role of Elphaba goes to cast member Ayoade Bamgboye, who also wrote the sketch.

The premise is simple and brilliant: what if Wicked had been made by Nollywood in the early 2000s? Presented by the fictional Holy Ghost Productions, the sketch is framed like a trailer for one of the straight-to-DVD films that defined Nigerian cinema for a generation. The picture quality is deliberately rough, the green screen is proudly visible, the title cards spin across the screen and the cast list rolls with full dramatic flair.

Instead of Oz, the story heads to LagOz, complete with an animated train journey across a map of Nigeria. Along the way there is a Professor Goat, a Wizard (played by Hammed Animashaun) who turns out to be broke, a bottle of Baileys that has gone off, and a pair of flying monkeys. Glinda wants a Birkin. Elphaba wants something that defies gravity of a very different kind. And the two leads come close to a kiss more than once, a wink to the fan theory that has followed Wicked for years.

One of the biggest laughs comes in the closing credits, where Erivo is billed by a long string of Nigerian names, ending with “also known as Cynthia Erivo”. For a London born star of Nigerian heritage, it lands as an affectionate in-joke rather than a cheap one.

That affection is what has made the sketch travel. Viewers online have praised how accurately it captures the look and rhythm of classic Nollywood, with many pointing out that it clearly comes from people who grew up watching those films. Bamgboye, who grew up in Lagos before moving to London, said she was “completely blown away” by the reaction and credited Erivo and the whole cast and crew.

For Bamgboye, it is another step in a remarkable run. Her debut show won Best Newcomer at the 2025 Edinburgh Comedy Awards, making her the first Black woman to take the prize, and she joined the first ever cast of SNL UK earlier this year.

The episode, which also featured musical guest Blossoms, was the show’s last of 2026. SNL UK returns in early 2027.
