David Roberts, a former police sergeant turned close protection officer, might not have been starstruck when he first heard Whitney Houston’s name, but little did he know, he was about to become her real-life protector.

Hailing from a quiet farming community in Wales, Roberts spent six years safeguarding the late superstar on her tours. During that time, he witnessed her rise to unparalleled fame, the challenges of her tumultuous relationships, and the heavy toll of a life lived under the spotlight.
Roberts' new book, Whitney: The Memoir of Her Bodyguard, sheds light on his experiences with Houston, whom he describes as “sophisticated, intelligent, and shy.” He revealed that their bond transcended words, often relying on non-verbal cues to navigate the chaotic world of fame.

Though Roberts insists his role was strictly professional, fans of The Bodyguard might be intrigued to know he checked Whitney into hotels under the name Rachel Marron, the character she portrayed in the iconic film.
Yet, Roberts paints a sobering picture of fame’s dark side, recounting obsessive fans, mounting pressures, and moments of visible distress for the singer. Despite his efforts to raise concerns about her well-being, he says the industry’s relentless demands often overshadowed Houston’s struggles.
Houston’s tragic death in 2012 left Roberts with lingering anger and heartbreak. “It shouldn’t have been,” he said, reflecting on her demise. His memoir, he hopes, will serve as both a tribute to her and a critique of an industry that often prioritizes profit over people.
